Summary

Continuing the definitive collection of what is probably the best superhero comic book in the universe

What now?

After the cataclysmic events of the last volume, Mark is left to pick up the pieces of his life。 Everything is different now-his family, his friends, his colleagues。 The world is a very strange and unfamiliar place for our young superhero。 He is faced with insurmountable odds, countless super-villains, otherworldly threats。。。 and graduating high school。 Nobody told him being a superhero would be easy, but nobody told him it'd be this hard, either。

This volume contains issues 14-24, the zero issue and the story from the Image Comics Summer Special from Free Comic Book Day 2004。

I love the art in this book and I love that Kirkman took his time telling this story and the stories of the characters surrounding Invincible。 So much of this is rushed through in other titles。 Well done, Mr。 Kirkman。 Well done。

Definitely should not have ended on such an open cliffhanger and unfortunately doesn't feel as complete as the first collection - but this is much needed improvement upon the first ultimate collection, where Kirkman trims down the filler and allows these moments to actually breathe life into the characters。My major complaint with the first few issues is that so many moments just felt pointless for the sake of a joke, most of the time the humor not landing with me。 It took too long to get to plot Definitely should not have ended on such an open cliffhanger and unfortunately doesn't feel as complete as the first collection - but this is much needed improvement upon the first ultimate collection, where Kirkman trims down the filler and allows these moments to actually breathe life into the characters。My major complaint with the first few issues is that so many moments just felt pointless for the sake of a joke, most of the time the humor not landing with me。 It took too long to get to plot crucial moments and it came at the expense of much needed characterization。 But ever since volume one where the status quo has officially been shaken up, the elements of grief and coming of age actually do come into full fruition。 Not much happens in this collection and as stated before, it feels more like build up (since the major stuff was supposed to happen in the next issue not included)。 But it uses this down time in-between big battles to just explore the aftermath, making it feel like a denouement that logically follows。 Sure it's not action packed, but it instead is more somber without getting too serious - maintaining a light hearted tone throughout。 It's as if Kirkman actually listened to the feedback and took this as an opportunity to develop the characters that really needed more depth added to them like Amber, who evolved from a flat character into someone that actually has some vulnerability and depth。My only complaint is that the major subplot involving a dimension-traveling man feels a bit disjointed and separated from the main narrative we're used to following, which doesn't really build up to anything relating to the characters until the end - and only briefly。 It is neither alluded to in dialogue or seen in the background, it becomes suddenly involved without much payoff。Even though this felt like an interquel between major moments in the story - it was also much appreciated for the story to slow down and make room for these moments of solace。 。。。more

This is where Invincible takes its concept and cranks it up to 11。 This volume sets up years of subplots, and is basically where the "true" invincible series starts。 Good stuff! The second volume of Invincible was as fun as the first。 Collecting issues 14-24, it shows the development of Mark as he graduates high school and goes to college。Following the events of the first volume, Mark now works closely with the Pentagon。 There is even a super-hero team that exists to fight major threats。 No threat is more pressing that the Viltrumite Empire's expansionist policies。 As Mark makes an impression throughout the galaxy, news of his actions have reached the Viltrumites。While The second volume of Invincible was as fun as the first。 Collecting issues 14-24, it shows the development of Mark as he graduates high school and goes to college。Following the events of the first volume, Mark now works closely with the Pentagon。 There is even a super-hero team that exists to fight major threats。 No threat is more pressing that the Viltrumite Empire's expansionist policies。 As Mark makes an impression throughout the galaxy, news of his actions have reached the Viltrumites。While there is nothing deep or amazing about this series, I can not deny that it is quite entertaining。 There is a strange balance of humor and development of the character's maturity all mixed with a sometimes very serious story。 This volume focused on Mark's development as a young adult starting school, as well as personal relationships with close friends and girlfriends。 Throughout the entire plot, in the background, other alien species work together to face the Viltrumite threat。 On Earth, Dr。 Angstorm's experiment misfires and it seems that Invincinble has a new enemy。Good art, fun story and an interesting cast of characters make Kirkman's Invincible a great comic。 While never assaying into deep philosophical ravings as an Alan Moore work, Kirkman's series is pop-corn munching fun。 There are complicated issues in the background though。 While there is dry humor, the story is serious and the consequences could be fatal。 A great, fun series。。that's all I expect from a comic。 。。。more

This is a solid collection to help grow Mark up in a mature way。 With him finally dating Amber, Mark is trying to balance school, superheroism, and dating。 He's not very good at it as he is called on A LOT to save the world because。。。well he's a superhero。 In doing so he has a lot of his relationships straining from his drunk mother, to his girlfriend not trusting him, to his best friend being a dick (Though he always is) to just trying to be a better man。 What I did enjoy is the slow burn of hi This is a solid collection to help grow Mark up in a mature way。 With him finally dating Amber, Mark is trying to balance school, superheroism, and dating。 He's not very good at it as he is called on A LOT to save the world because。。。well he's a superhero。 In doing so he has a lot of his relationships straining from his drunk mother, to his girlfriend not trusting him, to his best friend being a dick (Though he always is) to just trying to be a better man。 What I did enjoy is the slow burn of his growth here。 I think in the trades I gave both volume 4-5 (These volumes covered here) a 3。5 but I'ma bump both to a 4 because I can really enjoy seeing Mark's steady growth as a teenager to more adulthood。 I also really enjoyed the humor, it was far better in this volume than previous ones。 Also, Allen makes a comeback and he's always great。 While it feels mundane somewhat I promise all the storylines building up here are going to have a huge pay off, make this a great setup volume。 A 4 out of 5。 。。。more

This did a much better job than the first volume of justifying its own existence (i。e。 standing out by having something different to say or do than a normal superhero book)。 The issue really is, as with all monthly titles (indeed, as with serialized 19th century novels too) when you compile into one volume something that was meant to be consumed slowly over time, the lost narrative threads and repetitive story beats really stick out。I'm giving this 3 stars, like Volume 1, but for the record that This did a much better job than the first volume of justifying its own existence (i。e。 standing out by having something different to say or do than a normal superhero book)。 The issue really is, as with all monthly titles (indeed, as with serialized 19th century novels too) when you compile into one volume something that was meant to be consumed slowly over time, the lost narrative threads and repetitive story beats really stick out。I'm giving this 3 stars, like Volume 1, but for the record that was 2。5 stars rounded up to 3 and this is 3。5 stars rounded down to 3。 。。。more

This is dark comic。 A teenager who found out that not only he has super power, but his father is an alien。 The father son training part is fun。 The mother is cool Earth woman who kind of good dealing with all this。 Now the son Mark is trying to find a balance between superhero work and school work。 School work is failing, of course。 When he missed so much school。 Struggling with the unknown force behind the government agency is there is conspiracy behind the all this。 This makes it quite interes This is dark comic。 A teenager who found out that not only he has super power, but his father is an alien。 The father son training part is fun。 The mother is cool Earth woman who kind of good dealing with all this。 Now the son Mark is trying to find a balance between superhero work and school work。 School work is failing, of course。 When he missed so much school。 Struggling with the unknown force behind the government agency is there is conspiracy behind the all this。 This makes it quite interesting story。 The fight is graphic and violence。 。。。more

Invincible Ultimate Collection vol 2 is a non-stop fun ride through this super hero universe。Robert Kirkman masterfully continues to develop our main characters as they process and move forward from the events that ended volume 1, while continuing to expand this world and introduces even more characters in this volume。 It is comforting to know Kirkman got to finish this series on his own terms because he leaves so many dangling plot threads it makes one wonder how he’ll wrap them all up! Along with these plot threads we see the Grayson family grieve and move on in a world without Omni Man, Mark’s relationship with Amber grow, and the making of a new big baddie。 Continuing art here is Ryan Ottley, and he continues to amaze as he masters his craft。 It’s been a real treat to see his art style start similarly to the first artist on the series Corey Walker, to then progress to his own style that continues to get cleaner and more detailed in each issue。 Ottley’s art is as integral as Kirkman’s writing to make this series as good as it is。 Invincible Ultimate Collection volume 2 is a world-building success。 Kirkman corrects his problems here from volume one, wonderfully continues to build this universe, and drops so many clues and hints as to what’s coming in this story that it leaves you hungry for more。 Add Ottley’s amazing art that continues to improve even more, and you’ve got a formula for a series that confirms how great this storytelling medium really is。 。。。more

I like this series, and I dig the ink pen art style。 I love superheroes/people with powers in general, and this does it in a fun, clever way though a lot of the female characters are pretty bland。 This comic is older, so there are a few things that make me roll my eyes。 The humor’s usually lighthearted, but the action can get vicious and gritty when it wants too。 Either way, I’m excited to see how the story progresses。

Invincible started as a small homage, slice of life superhero comic。 It played with tropes and had delightful art。In this volume, Kirkman goes for broke, opening up his world by planting seeds for future threats; he aims for more serialized storytelling and shifts focus away from just Mark and his friends and families to other side characters and villains。 I'm not sure if I like it yet or not but I love Ottley's art enough to keep reading。I know I previously read some of this back in the day and Invincible started as a small homage, slice of life superhero comic。 It played with tropes and had delightful art。In this volume, Kirkman goes for broke, opening up his world by planting seeds for future threats; he aims for more serialized storytelling and shifts focus away from just Mark and his friends and families to other side characters and villains。 I'm not sure if I like it yet or not but I love Ottley's art enough to keep reading。I know I previously read some of this back in the day and stopped long before the conclusion and may repeat that again。 But for now this is fun and intriguing enough 。。。more

Absolutely amazing story of a dysfunctional superhero family。 The second volume of Invincible deals with Mark’s loss, his father’s identity and his mother’s issues。 A unique work of a mature, intelligent take on superheroes。

A couple years back I had read a few (scattered) single issue paperbacks, so it was nice returning to this world and reading some of the tales I had previously missed。This series is so enthralling。 Even when the creators use superhero archetypes, they find a way to flip them on the end and twist your expectations。。。。 I still say that the Viltrumites are Kryptonians with a Saiyan complex!!!

(okay he didn't actually go that far) All with the intent that basically nothing happens in the book that hasn't been building in the background for a good while beforehand。 And so that simultaneously these threads are growing, and growing, and even when one is resolved, even when a MAJOR thread is resolved, there's still stuff in the background growing。 To me this sounds like heaven。 And this volume delivers all of these things in spades。 If superheroes live in an exaggerated, hyper-reality, then this spread of subplots is the same thing。 No human being, no matter how boring their life, has only one thing going on。 There are always multiple small things happening in the back ground of our big psycho-babble life story that we consciously or unconsciously constructing for ourselves。 Books handled the way this one is being handled give us the exaggerated, hyper-reality, superhero equivalent。 Under whatever crap you're dealing with there is just always more crap。 Speaking more specifically, this is an exceptional expansion volume。 We got just enough of everybody in the first Ultimate Collection volume to establish all the players and the biggest conflicts。 At the core of it all was the build up to revealing the truth about Norman and the Mark vs。 Norman battle and its fall out。 This volume keeps Marks life at its center, but expands the scope of the world around him, adding an expanding rogues gallery of both serious and slightly goofy villains, taking Mark to new places we haven't seen yet and introducing multiple potential cosmic and earthbound threats。 In addition there are multiple seeds planted on a strictly character, relationship, "realist drama" side as well。 All of which are handled realistically, but without any exaggerated moaning and groaning。 The art is consistently gorgeous throughout, and it seems obvious that the whole team had a massive blast with all the new characters introduced。 Honestly, it's kind of like the team said, "Mark you just lost your evil-alien conqueror father, where are you going to go next?" and Mark's answer was "Everywhere!", so the team did that。 With flair! 。。。more
